What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on ground fighting and submission techniques. The art traces its roots to the legendary Gracie family of Brazil, who adapted traditional Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu techniques in the early 20th century. Carlos Gracie learned from Japanese judoka Mitsuyo Maeda in 1914, and together with his brother Hélio, they refined the techniques to create what we now know as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hélio Gracie, known for his smaller stature, modified the art to emphasize leverage and timing, proving that a smaller, weaker person could successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent.
