It is often said that the best place to start is at the beginning, and there is no better first lesson than that which Master Carlos Gracie Jr. teaches us – that Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art form. It is a way to connect people at the very core of their beings. His model for a teaching style clearly reflects this central belief, and from his teaching style we can learn how to reach as many people as possible in our mission of Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone.

The Teaching Style

From student to athlete to instructor, Master Carlos Gracie Jr. worked to build a knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu and a method for sharing that knowledge with others. One of the reasons why he has been so successful at doing this is because he has not focused on just one, singular aspect of teaching. He doesn’t put all his efforts into technique – his approach encompasses many various aspects that are all relevant to both students and school owners.

Philosophy – Master Carlos Gracie Jr. has always dedicated time and attention to sharing the philosophy behind his Jiu-Jitsu teachings. In a way, this is the same approach that current instructors should be taking with each and every end of class message.

Love for the Art – It is easy to see when someone is truly passionate about a subject, and Master Carlos Gracie Jr.’s love for Jiu-Jitsu is evident in the energy he has given to teaching over the years, as well as the mere fact that his mission is all about sharing the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu with as many people as possible.

Commitment to Self-Defense – He has always placed an emphasis on strong teachings of self-defense techniques, and more than once he has randomly asked a student during class to escape from a certain position – always training and always challenging students to understand the power and effectiveness of knowing these techniques.

Emphasis on Takedowns – Known for his inner thigh throw, Master Carlos Gracie Jr. has always placed emphasis on takedown techniques, and practicing these repeatedly was common at schools where he taught.

View on Passing and Defending Guard – He has always encouraged his students to understand the techniques for both of these and their value to overall Jiu-Jitsu knowledge.

Emphasis on Learning and Personal Growth – Master Carlos Gracie Jr. has always believed that every situation offers an opportunity to learn and grow – we only fail when we fail to learn from the situation.

The previous are just some of the examples of the aspects included in the teaching style of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. In Course 4, Lesson 1 of the ICP5 we expand on these and other aspects, and there are numerous, inspiring words shared by those who have had the privilege of training directly with Master Carlos Gracie Jr. They share personal stories of learning from one of the best, and applying those lessons into their own training and teaching.
